Visual Geography: Useful Websites
Here are a selection of websites that are useful for images of places and people. Please remember that most images on the internet are the copyright of the photographer - images for educational use are still subject to copyright guidance.

  • Images of the World - comprehensive library of photographs from all over the world. Images can be used in school but you must contact the photographer
  • Yann Arthus Betrand - website of the famous 'Earth From The Air' photographer. Copyright restrictions apply.
  • Photos by Paul Jeffrey - images of displacement and disaster. Copyright restrictions apply
  • Tribal Eye - photographs of exploration and travel from around the globe. Copyright restrictions apply.
  • The Geo-Images Project - The Geo-Images Project at the University of California attempts to make images that are useful in the teaching of geography more widely available using computers and the internet. Copyright restrictions apply.
  • MorgueFile - free stock photography for use by anyone. Used by the GA on many occasions!
  • University of Cambridge - this page lists websites containing images freely available for use in an educational context.
  • The Lighthouse for Education - aerial photos of Humberside
  • UK Photos - a large selection of UK images including aerial shots of several cities.
  • Free Aerial Photographs of Plymouth and AreaGeograph British Isles - a project which aims to collect a geographically representative photo for every square kilometer of the British Isles.
  • Fotosearch - an extensive library of more than 3 million images plus royalty-free clip art, illustrations, video clips, vector maps and background clip art imagery. The database contains thousands of images related to geography including 19,000+ images from National Geographic.
